Atletico Madrid were just seconds away from lifting the Champions League for the first time in their history last May before Sergio Ramos headed in a Luka Modric cross to send last year’s Champions League final to extra time where a ruthless Real side put their rivals to the sword and ran out 4-1 winners.
Since that day though, Atletico are unbeaten in seven against their rivals and they will be looking to seek revenge for last year when the two sides reconvene at the Bernabeu on Wednesday evening. Madrid derbies are always special occasions and this one will be no different with the tie hanging in the balance after a 0-0 draw in the last ever Madrileno at the Vicente Calderon.
Jan Oblak pulled off a stunning save to deny Gareth Bale in the third minute of that tie and whilst that was the only clear cut chance of the game, both sides could’ve hit the back of the net.
It was, as all derbies are, a spiky affair and both Mario Suarez and Marcelo will miss the second leg after reaching their yellow card limit and Real could be without both full backs if UEFA decide to act after Dani Carvajal’s punch on Mario Mandzukic.
0-0 is a result both managers would have perhaps taken if they were offered it before the start of the game with Simeone no doubt pleased to see his side not concede a vital away goal and Ancelotti will also be pleased that the tie is still level. Whatever the outcome of the second leg it is sure to be an enthralling game of football.
Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid Betting Tips
- Match to end in a draw – These two know all about each other having met seven times already this season and Atletico know that a score draw will see them through to the semi-finals at the expense of Real. Simeone’s side are experts at containing Real’s attacking threat and you can back the scores to be level at 14/5 with Sky Bet.
- Both teams to score – In all three matches at the Bernabeu this season both sides have hit the back of the net and these games often have goals in them. That’s not particularly surprising given Real’s array of fine attackers but Atletico also have some very decent players with Antoine Griezmann having had a stellar first season so far in the capital. BTTS can be backed at odds of 9/10 with Ladbrokes.
- Match to finish 1-1 – If you want better odds than the 14/5 on the draw then you can back a 1-1 draw at 7/1 with BetVictor. Atleti’s 4-0 win aside, there haven’t been many high scoring matches between these two this season and we think that this will be another low scoring, tight affair, albeit with both sides managing to score one.
- Real to score in the first 10 minutes – Were it not for Oblak’s fine save, Real would’ve been one up inside the first 10 minutes of the first leg and Ancelotti’s side like to start quickly and blow the opposition away. You can back them score early at 5/1 with Bet365 which could be a shrewd move.
